Our military footprint aligns with our global economic requirements for strategic resources and markets -- with oil topping the list. You are not likely to see a realignment of military expenditures unless you also see a realignment of economic patterns -- chief among them an end to our dependence on oil. If you look at our political system and the role of corporate funding for political campaigns, and ask yourself how powerful the military and energy lobbies are in that process, you can readily see that the only hope for America is an educated and activist populace. Alas, the American public is both apathetic and easily led around by the nose -- witness how easily we have convinced ourselves that carbon is not harmful and health insurance is only in need of fatter profits for drug companies. Lets be honest, we are stupid and easily herded by people who play to our fears and our idiotic ideology. Just take any policy and call it a 'government takeover' and the policy is dead on arrival. Worse, call it a new 'tax' and it will be shot on sight. And if anything should slip through, call it a threat to national security and a blank check will appear in a flash. Lets face it, in our collective public life we are just plain stupid.
