There is a hierarchical habit among conservatives. They seem to like things to progress in an orderly manner. OTOH democrats let Hubert Humphrey run two or three times.

I believe that 1996 was a sop to an old faithful servant. Nobody in the GOP believed after Clinton was neutered by the Contract with America that he could be defeated.

There are plenty of democrats that believe they should move up because it is their turn. Remember Al Gore?

In the end I am just an observer. Except Iowa, by the time the primary makes it to the Great Plains the candidates have been chosen. I don't talk to party bigwigs and the political supporters I know don't ask my advice on politics.

If Obama had it him to act like a centrist he would be reelected if Republicans control Congress. Perhaps that is his end game. If he were thinking strategically he might use divisiveness to dispose of Reid and Pelosi.
