Note that their tent and hole are portable. If they get a job or start a business on the other side of the island, they can simply pick up their tent, planks and walk to the new location, rent a shovel for a day or two, and build another two storey earthquake and hurricane proof abode.

If they could find a ready-built abode or hole, they could simply sell their old one and buy that.
