Aware Lite: Good news for AMTX

Actually this Aware announcement contains some potentially good news for AMTX/WSTL. One of the major points that the telcos have raised for stalling on the ADSL rollout is the need to install these voice/data splitters at the customer's premises. They claim that the enormity of this physical task will overwhelm their service personnel. Since a portion of the market (consumer, a portion which AMTX isn't really targetting) won't need this service, this substantially diminishes this argument. It also means that it will be easier (shorter waiting periods) for businesses (implementing ADSL) to actually get a telco service representative to install the necessary splitter.

The other thing is that it differentiates the Aware product line from the Amati/Westell product line. If Aware ends up selling a large number of these units, then they will concentrate their resources into this market. This might mean that Aware provides less competition to Amati/Westell in other markets.

I was surprised that no one has yet mentioned the 22K distance over local loops for DSL Lite. If that is accurate, then it will also substantially enlarge the market for ADSL services.
