AMD Slashes Processor Prices

Continuing its pledge to undersell Intel, Advanced Micro Devices has slashed
fourth-quarter processor prices by up to more than 20 percent. AMD's
166MHz K6 processor is now priced at $84, down from $109 last quarter.
The 200MHz version is priced at $160, down from $189. In addition, the
233MHz chip costs $225, down from $289.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip maker adjusted its prices after Intel slashed
prices on its Pentium II and Pentium with MMX products. The percentages
of the AMD price drop mirror the percent cuts from Intel. The 166MHz
processor from both companies saw the largest price drop--a 23 percent
price reduction.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel dropped the price of its 166MHz Pentium
with MMX to $112, a 23 percent drop in the price from the previous quarter.
The 200MHz Pentium with MMX is priced at $213, down from $252 in the
third quarter. And Intel's Pentium 233MHz with MMX is priced at $300, a
22 percent reduction in its price from the previous quarter.
To further increase its reseller base, AMD also unveiled a boxed processor
program to rival the boxed processor program from Intel. Initially, the K6
200MHz and 233MHz chips will be available as boxed products; prices are
less than $10 higher than prices for the non-boxed version. Additional thermal
hardware, however, is included in the boxed version. Going forward, AMD
will offer new processors in its boxed-chip and non-boxed-chip programs.
