Not exactly. The interracial marriages where not considered something other than marriages, they where rather considered (by many) to be immoral or inappropriate marriages, or otherwise marriages which some people wanted to prevent.

Deciding to legally recognize, support, and refrain from punishing, interracial marriages, was not a change in the definition of marriage, but a change in the treatment of some marriages.
