So everything went off without a hitch adding Linux. I selected ext3 for the file system, after installation the updates took a few minutes. Total size looks like it is just 3.7GB, so that is about a quarter the size of my slimmed down XP, although I'm sure it will double as I add some things.
At startup grub presents everything--boot up Helena, a Mint rescue, the small Dell hardware utilities partition I left on the drive, and of course XP.
When I do boot XP it does not see the Linux partition at all, and in Mint so long as I only select the filesystem icon I don't see any XP folders. I can try to mount the HDD (there is an icon for it that shows the full size) but I wont risk doing that and don't see the point. If I want to share files, I'll use my thumb drive, which I've already used to move my firefox bookmarks over.
Anyway, I was very slow and cautious, but so far so good. It'll fun to 'compile' programs and stuff, whatever that is all about. Avidemux is the first thing I'll try, see if editing video is smoother here than under xp.
It is nice to have a fully functional system without having done a thing at the command line! |
