It didn't take 1800 years actually. Slavery was eliminated twice. First it was eliminated in the Roman empire and Europe. When European nations founded overseas colonies they allowed it in those overseas colonies (though never in their home countries) because of the need to develop a workforce where there wasn't one. Even there it was eventually eliminated. The process took a couple hundred years both times. They called it the dark ages because it was a period of intellectual decline after the fall of Rome and replaced by the harsh dogma of the church when intellectuals were put to death by the church for heresy. Guys like Bruno, Copericus (almost killed) and Galileo (almost killed). Bruno was the only intellectual put to death .... though lots of blood was shed over heresy most heretics weren't intellectuals. History goes like this: 350 BC, ancient Greeks explored reason, Romans wipped out Greece; then Rome fell and we went into the Dark ages until about the 14th century (renaissance); and then the 18th century, "age of enlightenment" whereby people realized reason was the foundation of civilzation. Thats a comic book version of history.
