Yaacov - Re: "Meanwhile, Intel is stuck with no new ideas and no profits in sight...."

Sorry, Yaacov - that was meant entirely as a JOKE.

Intel is making very good profits considering the market situation with AMD and Cyrix as well as Intel's attempt to transition the PC marketplace from Pentium MMX to Pentium II.

Intel is making money while AMD and CYRIX continue to lose money, while "embracing" a low cost (sub- $1000 PC). Intel's chips are going into this segment - especially their low end non-MMX chips and 166 MHz Pentium MMX.

Most industry analysts are focusing entirely on this one issue while ignoring Intel's high profit server and Workstation business.

Now, it is true that Intel's earnings growth has stopped and earnings have come down in the past two quarters. This trend could continue for the next quarter or two.

When will profits start to rise? My guess, Q2 - Q3 of 1998. By then, Intel will have 50% of their CPUs in Pentium II and the Deschutes version (0.25 micron) should be replacing the more expensive 0.35 micron original Pentium II.

Intel's stock is down about 25% from its all time high - yet still up from its January 1, 1997 price of about $66. This isn't good if you bought the stock recently, but it's not too bad if you have held it for longer than a year.
