The little Chania harbor sure has changed since 72.

Like you, I really enjoyed my time on Crete (one+ month).
Another fine memory was when a SEAL took me diving in another ancient harbor, Agia galini. It has really changed too. It was a tiny fishing and farming village, with no cars in town center...roads were to narrow and had masonry steps.

And the beaches between the USAF base at Iraklion and the town of Heraklion were world class.

Caves on the other side of a river, we waded across, that flows into the ocean next to the harbor were home to a group of hippies from around the world. Interesting group but we left when we saw what they were smoking.

I seriously doubt we let Greece let Souda Bay, Crete get away. It is the deepest harbor in the Med.
