"Anyone that rails away about the evils of a system for their adult life and then reverses direction because of 65 birthday, as Regan...is a hypocrite... a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings..
Your logic is really off there. I don't recall Reagan declaring when he turned 65 that he thinks socialized medicine is wonderful. Had he done so, I would agree that would be hypocritical.
You are ducking my question about what you would expect a non-hypocrite to do at age 65. What would a Canadian who didn't agree with socialized medicine do if he was having a heart attack, ask the ambulance to take him to Buffalo or Detroit? He'd suck it in and go to the nearest emergency room like any sane person. What would he have to do to satisfy you that he wasn't a hypocrite?
should slap their Visa down
For one thing, that's just silly. You paid in, reluctantly, and you claim your due, reluctantly. No change in principle, just acceptance of reality. That's what adults do.
For another, even if you used your Visa, you'd still be subject to Medicare. Medicare isn't just about "insurance." For example, I recently had a colonoscopy that had to be done in a hospital rather than the gastroenterologist's surgery because I'm over 65. Even had I paid for it with my Visa, I still would have been subject to Medicare requirements. Had I paid for it myself, I would have been really mad because colonoscopies cost more in a hospital setting. I would have been furious at having to pay the Medicare premium when I wasn't even using Medicare. But such is life. We live in civilized societies where we are expected to follow the stupid rules as well as the sensible ones.
Let me ask you again, what would you have had me do? Leave the country for my colonoscopy? Not get one? What? |
