Romania Feb Jobless Rate Rises To 8.3%, Highest Since Mar 2003

BUCHAREST (Dow Jones)--Romania's unemployment rate rose to 8.3% in February, both the highest rate and the highest total number of jobless since March 2003, official data showed Monday, news agency Mediafax reported.

The country's employment agency ANOFM said the total number of jobless people reached 762,375 in February. The jobless rate in January was 8.1%.

In February 2009, the unemployment rate was at 5.3%, or 477,860 people.

In March 2003, there were 779,154 unemployed people registered, and a jobless rate of 8.6%.

Romania's jobless rate is expected to rise further in 2010, particularly in light of the government's planned cuts in the public sector to help lower the budget deficit to 5.9% of gross domestic product, versus 7.2% of GDP in 2009.
