"I notice that the news stories you think should get more attention, pretty much all are either chronic problems, or slowly developing issues. I agree that more attention should be paid to these types of issues in general, but news is about dramatic new changes or information (even if its just the dramatic new change in some celebrities dating relationships, or the discovery of their drug addiction), and that's unlikely to change."
My post was a response to criticism for saying Tatum O'neal's cocaine use was not deserving of the attention it got considering all the really major happenings that were drastically impacting living conditions in the Southwest US.
I recently looked for major breaking news and got this: "For Breaking News go to: News about Britney Spears continually updated from thousands of sources around the net. www.topix.net/who/britney-spears
The Southern California antics of Britney, Lynsey L., Paris H., etc captured attention and spawned millions of articles and opinion commentaries for a few years.
There was a time when significant life and death issues in other lands did not have a noticeable impact here at home... and maybe we are still partly in that time, although that era is drawing to a close. The societies of the world have virtually been shrunk as we have clashed and now are in a blending process.
These 'news' articles are fed to a fat lazy populous who is comfortable with their status quo and don't want to have their attention drawn to what I have labeled 'highly significant'. If we don't pay attention to it, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, or that it isn't serious, or that it will just work itself out and go away, it means we are neglectful and we are being enabled by the major past time of our culture. Nothing good ever comes of neglect.
The 'news' media feeds gossip and rumor cravings like fatty foods feeds appetite cravings. In the mean time we are seeing grotesquely aggressive population of feminists countered with an equally impotent emasculated population, who seem satisfied by substituting prescription hard ons for the natural thing. This is not a formula for success in the culture of my grand children's grandchildren who will not have the luxury of turning the channel of their attention away from Global issues. They will need great strength of character, confidence, competence, and courage to face the tidal wave of Global change racing their way. IMO, they are not going to have it if this trend continues much longer. |
