I was camping on Catalina Island during a period when boar hunting was in effect.

Had orange tents and orange chairs. It was in the open in a designated campground with tables, benches and BBQs nearby. There was a big oak tree close by. Wide open space, big campground with the beach nearby.

A truck with 6 hunters in camo and riding in the bed drove up and they all jumped out of the truck, crouched down with their guns pointed at us and approached - still pointing their guns at us.

It was frightening to us because they didn't back off even after everyone yelled at them.

There could be no mistake that we were campers and not game. Fortunately, everyone except for me, was an islander - a Harbor Patrolman, a city councilman, and 2 business owners.

They were furious.

Took no time for the local gendarmes to round them up. The judge/magistrate only comes over once a week, so the 6 of them had to spend a week in jail waiting for him. The local guy with the truck got a $500 fine and lost his license to take the hunters around the island. He packed up and left. The hunters went through the whole routine of being mugged and fingerprinted and now have a record. They all received a fine and permanent ban from the island.
