It's beyond me how such an 'accident' could happen. I never take sound shots, and when I do shoot at an elk I pretty much have to see the whole animal first. My hunting mentor, who's now 92, could see the tip of an ear twitch from a hundred yards away. I could never do that.

On reflection, the story reveals that the officer was a FS LEO, a category of employee that is trained at Quantico and authorized to go armed. Their explicit mission is to enforce laws on national forest land. I've been in the woods all my life and never saw such a need. They are part of a huge national police force that could be mobilized under martial law if it were ever declared.

I took the training for a Level IV, which included a field exercise to demonstrate their techniques. I got 'killed' twice because I saw nothing unusual about campers with a rifle sticking out from under a sleeping bag, but they were trying to demonstrate how one should get between the firearm and the person even in benign situations.

As a consequence of being trained, I served as security at a project fire one time, and after spending four twelve hour days sitting on my butt I finally prevented one contractor from eating an unauthorized meal at the mess tent.
