Telxon Arms the Mobile Workforce with Two New Pen-Based Portables
CHICAGO, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Two new rugged wireless pen-based mobile computers designed to add power, versatility and productivity to the fast- growing mobile workforce were introduced at Scan-Tech 97 by Telxon Corporation, a world leader in mobile and wireless computing solutions.
Demonstrated for the first time were the Telxon PBC-1194, a versatile Pentium(R) powered wireless workstation, and the PBC-1124, a compact, lightweight portable featuring local and wide area networking options.
''The broad acceptance of these new products is evidenced by the number of Telxon customers who have already placed advanced orders totaling more than $60 million,'' said James Cleveland, president of Telxon North America.
''With the mobile workforce predicted to top 55,000,000 strong in the next several years in North America alone, Telxon broke new ground in developing the PBC-1194,'' said Cleveland. ''The development effort was probably the most significant in terms of people, resources and dollars that Telxon has ever made in a new product line.''
The key to the PBC-1194's flexibility is its modular design. Like a chameleon, it easily adapts to virtually any application environment, transforming from a portable tablet to a mobile workstation to a desktop PC in seconds.
Featuring industry standard PC architecture, the PBC-1194 is powered by a Pentium 133 megahertz chip, and features 32 megabytes of RAM, with future upgradeable options and supports Windows(R) 95 operating system with full pen functionality.
''We conducted considerable market research with our customers to determine the precise functionality of this new product. We found that many wanted more than just a powerful touch-screen tablet,'' said Julie Strohm, Telxon's vice president for pen-based computer sales.
''The PBC-1194 is really a cross-functional device with a wide range of peripheral options including an attachable keyboard module and a desktop, wall- or vehicle-mount docking station. This allows the 1194 to virtually transform from a pen-based tablet to a notebook-style portable, to a desktop PC enabling the user to manage and communicate information on the go, in a vehicle or in an office environment'', said Strohm.
The PBC-1194 also addresses one of the major challenges facing the mobile computing industry -- power management. A 2400 mAh or 3600 mAh hot-swapable Lithium Ion battery pack, supported by industry standard advanced power management, provides ample energy for even the most demanding application routines. A supplementary Telxon advanced power management system supports the unique requirements of wireless and mobile computing technologies. The PBC-1194 is the ideal go-anywhere solution for a myriad of mobile computing applications including insurance, field service, law enforcement, workforce management, healthcare, manufacturing, retailing and sales force automation.
The PBC-1194 core unit boasts a wide range of integrated communication options including an internal modem, CDPD, local and wide-area radios, and four PC card slots, two of which are internally sealed for protection. The unit also features a built-in microphone and a sound quality speaker.
The PBC-1124 is only 7.6 inches long and weighs just 24.5 ounces. Built with a custom magnesium case and sturdy frame, the 1124 was engineered for reliability in even the most demanding operating environments.
This compact unit packs 486 processing power, advanced touch screen technology and robust wireless networking into a rugged mobile information management tool. The basic 1124 contains two megabytes of RAM, expandable to 12MB as a factory configuration. It also includes two megabytes of Flash PROM, expandable to 60MB. Power is provided by Lithium Ion battery pack. Electronic data capture is enabled via laser scanner, digital image processor or magnetic stripe reader plug-on modules.
Built-in data communication support includes a serial infrared port and a PC Card slot. Wireless local area networking is enabled via a built-in direct sequence or frequency hopping spread spectrum radio. Ardis, Ram Mobile Data, CDPD and CSC are supported for wide area networking.
