don't understand why engine wasn't stopped immediately He was on the freeway. There is speculation the guy didn't want to lose his power steering at such a high speed. It goes without saying......be careful with your car.......plan ahead what you will do if you encounter a similar problem. Where there is smoke, there tends to be fire.
