Barb - Re: " Are there any particular signals you look for to determine an optimal buying point?"

One thing I look for is when companies like Intel - leaders in their field - get SLAMMED big time in one day - like the $10 drubbing in intra-day trading Intel took on 10/27/97.

This may not be the low point, but it sure makes it a better buy than the day before the drubbing.

If you look at Intel's Stock Chart over any short time period, you will find steep drops, steep rises, and periods of inactivity.
The only "constant" is that over a LONG period of time (> 1 year) it has almost ALWAYS gone up.

Look for something to happen on Friday after the analysts meeting. Depending upon what Intel says to the analysts, the stock could make a fast, severe move down or up. This may happen late Friday or early Monday morning.
