That isn't the problem. Letting quality control slip to service that demand is.

You know this, how? You are almost certainly wrong. That many people going suddenly unemployed would have strong economic effects. And there is no way it would be restricted to only a small corner of the country. If for no other reason, those people buy goods and services from Californian companies.
