It is really quite impressive, and surprising, that Apple can come from nowhere, having been involved with other consumer electronics, computers and music devices, to be the world champion [in image if not in actual sales just yet].

The famed Nokia economies of scale were not much use in keeping Apple at bay [or the several others which are booming in the cyberphone business].

There really isn't any reason that Qualcomm in 1995 couldn't have got the handset business going with innovative designs.

NextWave and Leap and the handsets and infrastructure and Eudora and asics and so on should have been able to be a $trillion company now. Microsoft nearly missed the internet altogether. Belatedly, they got onto it. But they missed the boat in so many ways despite having a vast head start if they had had the imagination to make it happen.

Motorola was King Kong at one stage, but can now be bought with Qualcomm's spare cash [$16 billion market capitalisation]. L M Ericsson had its day [Sony Ericsson holding on]. Nortel was a big infrastructure builder but no more.
