Uncontrolled acceleration. The problem with Prius and other Toyotas is similar to government spending.

People are pushing the accelerator for personal reasons they prefer not to mention. Such as they like to go faster. "Oh, sorry officer, it was that dang uncontrolled acceleration again".

Or they want to get on tv. Like the guy making an emergency call then carefully ignoring the operator who suggested putting it in neutral, or turning off the motors or what have you.

It's easy to get acceleration - push the accelerator.

There are some ways to get uncontrolled acceleration such as one of my sons in law having a vehicle with a frayed accelerator cable. I pointed out to him that the frayed wires could get jammed inside the cable and the vehicle would be going very fast. He should fix it before he gets a problem.

No doubt there are problems like that. People do need to maintain their vehicles in good working order. Everything breaks in the end.

Or maybe the mechanism could jam in some other way, such as getting the floor mat or other junk lying around on the floor stopping the mechanism working. My Toyota Camry floor mat has always slid forwards and upwards and I need to periodically adjust it. People do need to take some care in keeping their driving mechanisms clear of debris. Some of the more intelligent in the population would know that. Or maybe the mechanism gets ants in it, or is badly designed and sticks too easily.

It looks like mass hysteria.

Toyota should sue people for defamation, fraud or what have you. No doubt some will be hoping to get a big payoff. "Hmmm, if my car gets uncontrolled acceleration, I can sell the story to the news media and maybe get $10 million from some dumb jury".
