Not "just as", they where considered marriages by essentially everyone.

No they weren't. Interracial marriages were illegal in many states up til 1967 when the Supreme Ct ruled.

Yes they where. "Illegal" is not identical to "not a marriage", but rather to "an illegal marriage".

And people married in a state where the marriages where legal where generally considered legally married all around.
