(Lot's of early emigration to the New World was spurred by religious conflicts in old Europe. The Huguenot thing alone accounted for quite a bit settlement.) I was watching a historical special about Salem just the other day and heard them mention a fact that I was not aware of previously: One of the 'reasons' that there were so many Witch burnings in the region was that the Church (the official State religion of the colony...) and the local government shared equally in the money gleaned from SELLING OFF THE ESTATES of the "witches" they burned. So... pretty much anyone with a big nose, or warts, or otherwise 'disagreeable' (and with real property <g>) was a good candidate for burning by the Government/Church authorities....
