It's complex, but not really. Simpe garden-variety scam involving off balance sheet stuff designed to make the balance sheet look decent at the end of a quarter. Borrowed funny money used to ratchet down leverage but the liability for it not shown anywhere. A bit like Enron, if not exactly so. Read Denninger and Naked Capitalism for the nasty details. Lehman, Fuld, Geithner...all in bed to prop up a dying co. Now here is the kicker, IMO, it was left to the wolves so that the criminal incompetence of the aforesaid might better escape scrutiny.
