Here a letter I got from e_T, I'm posting it as it give some interesting tips that I have not seen posted.
Thank you for your recent e-mail message. (In regards to server down)

Usually, this problem is only temporary. If you wait a little while
and try again, you should be able to access our website.

If you are using a favorite place or bookmark to access our site, that
may not be the cause of your trouble. You should always type in the
address etrade.com to access our website. Please always
make sure that you are spelling the name of the website correctly.

It is also possible that your Internet service provider's servers are
unable to locate the address for our server. Try using this address:
198.93.33.75

This should allow you to get to our website. If this does not help,
please try going to this address instead: 204.5.38.117

You should get a window asking you about a certificate name check.
Click continue and you should get a screen that is blank except with
the words Main Menu underlined at the top left of the screen. Click
on that and it should let you log on.

If you have any additional questions or comments, please e-mail us at
trading@etrade.com or service@etrade.com, or you may call a Customer
Service Representative, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 12:00am
Midnight (Eastern Time), toll-free, at 1-800/STOCKS5 (1-800/786-2575).

Sincerely,

E*TRADE Customer Service
