The "Christian Church Corporation" was no different than Microsoft. They had beaten out dozens of other major religious competitors. Mithraism, Zoroastrianism, and innumerable movements from within.

There were thousands of "gospels" and fictional tales stimulating the imaginations of myriad tribes and intellectual orders.

After a bit, Christianity gained the upper hand-- a hodgepodge of every religion known to man.

But there was no real substance to this mythos--no philosophy. So the mutterers (or the nutterers) and the power brokers go to work to INVENT a core philosophy that will forward into thousands of ignorant sects.

When you are imagining and inventing there is bound to be conflict. Thus...Tertullian decided that god was three persons: God, Christ, the Holy Spirit. They were distinct but they were one...according to Tertullian.

Origen (184-254) decided that the "Son" was a timeless origination from the Father's essence. Makes sense--right!

But then we have Arius who maintained that the essence of God is indivisible and cannot be shared. It followed that "Christ" was a creature and subject to "sin".

If his "take" had prevailed Christianity would have reverted to polytheism prima facie and the political power of Rome would have been impinged. So Constantine called (in 324) the Council of Nicaea. Opposing the genius of Arius was an Alexandrian Deacon named Athanasius (and the Might of the Roman Empire). The latter prevailed (there was no political value in accepting a creed that led to Paganism).

Later came the Chalcedon Creeds...but HOW God and Jesus were one PERSON was still to be "figured out"!!

But Augustine opined on Grace and SIN and Anselm created the Doctrine of Atonement and Luther ("Lies of the Jews"--the forerunner of Nazism) talked about justification by Faith (and driving out the Jews)--and Calvin believed in the "Authority" of the Scriptures and the Authority of conscience.

And always these doctrines of Christianity were argued and fought over by devout Christians DIAMETRICALLY opposed to one another, and as always---somebody has to win!

The Christian religion (as all religions) is man-made. It starts with myth and it wastes billions of words and arguments in inventing ways to reconcile nonsense and to create structure (Dianetics did the same thing...amazing, eh??)

If the brilliance of Arius had prevailed at Nicea the Christian religion would be far more scattered than it is now. But politics trumps logic!!

So it has been like millions of people writing a weblog and the webmaster (or church) internalizing it all into a philosophy and a structure! Ummm...God must be three, then. :-) Jesus must be God then...ummmm...what about the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit could sort of make Jesus God and Man but not either one or something because Jesus must be God or we are pagans for worshiping at least two Gods. So Jesus Just IS and Is and is also and that too and also and so on and so is the Holy Spirit AND God and always was but not and wasn't quite but was indwelling or something but the best way to say it is that Jesus was Complete as to his Godhead and Complete as to his Manhood (because when you are inventing nonsensical trash in the service of the ongoing invention of a powerful religion you just need to piss with words)!

But HOW they were ONE but distinct...Nobody yet knew. Give them another century or so! We are working on it as we split into thousands of sects with ABSOLUTE TRUTH!!
