My opinion is that a downgrade of the US dollar would be the beginning of the end of the entire world's monetary system. The US will be the last currency to be downgraded, not only because it is the main reserve currency, but also because of the predominance or hegemony of the US dollar in world trade.

But I don't know what would take its place, or what would take the place of the world's fiat money system. Gold bugs of course hope it would be gold, and argue that gold is money, and every other currency would be measured against it. I'm sure you are quite familiar with all of that.
