DJ EU Tells UK PM Brown To Curb Spending -UK Times

LONDON (Dow Jones)--U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown was dealt an embarrassing blow Monday night when Brussels warned that the U.K. must do more to curb its spiraling debt, the U.K. daily The Times reports Tuesday.

The European Commission wants the ruling Labour Party to outline further spending cuts and spell out where the ax will fall.

The intervention, a week before the U.K. Budget, will electrify the debate over the economy, the newspaper says. The leader of the opposition Conservatives David Cameron promised in a BBC interview Monday night to fight the election campaign by going farther than Brown in saying where cuts will be made, The Times said.
