yes, i am the product of such parents...

my parents worked 2 full time jobs and let me 'loose' in the pubic school system...(of course that was back in the day when there were actual *standards* in public schools) and i had a father who would extract a price from me if i didn't 'perform' (despite his limited personal involvement in teaching himself)

my father was a german immigrant with an 8th grade education and my mother was a product of the public school system (no advanced degree)

i graduated in the upper 5% of my class, with honors, (despite my being a self described 'slacker' i excelled simply because of my self determination and a strict father looming in the background) my continuing education was strictly a matter of my own impetus and personal finances

what has changed since then?

i would submit to your it is the dumbed down educational system, (my acquaintances who are teachers confirm this, my personal assistant who is a teacher now has ridiculous stories of parental neglect that would curl your hair)

and my point is UNLESS the parents are willing to expend some of their own finances and effort, their children will probably have a very bad outcome, despite the ridiculous amounts of taxpayer money being thrown at the teachers unions

i know many people of limited means who have taken the education of their children upon themselves....

palming your kids onto the state (like my parents did) is no longer a realistic option, as they say....'things have changed'

yes there are some good teachers out there, and that would be the case no matter how much $$ we spend....but unless you are willing to augment said 'education' with your own leadership and finances, in general....do not expect a good outcome, you may get lucky and have a 'decent' outcome (luck of the draw WRT teachers) however, parental involvement is a must today because the schools are far worse...

and yet we keep thinking if we throw more money at the same broken system, we'll get better results...

well, good luck with that, you'll need it
