A Punch and Judy show to impress the Palestinians that the US is on their side and induce/seduce them into being more reasonable in their terms of negotiation. Reasonable, meaning to agree with whatever Israel offers. Only when the US is prepared to inflict real costs on Israel, eg sanctions, curtailment of military supplies or stopping of financial aid, will one be able to say US/Israeli relations are bad.
