Theo: There is also the double-counting of transactions. A sale of X number of shares from an investor to a MM results in volume of X. A sale of those same shares from the MM to the next investor means the volume is 2X. Same shares went from one seller to one buyer, volume is twice the number of those shares. Sometimes, MM's sell to one another which also counts as volume. This happens on NASDAQ and Bulletin Board, but not on AMEX and NYSE. I've seen reference to a study which indicates that 41% of the volume on NASDAQ actually represents retail seller to retail buyer transactions. The remaining 59% is to, from, or between MM's. So, actually it is likely that less than half the float (if it really is 2 million shares) changed hands today.
