The company also released documents to refute critics of its requirement that personal computer manufacturers sign confidentiality agreements as a condition of obtaining Microsoft's widely used Windows 95 operating system. William Neukom, Microsoft's senior vice president, sent Hatch copies of confidentiality provisions used by rivals Novell Inc. and Sun Microsystems. ''As you will see, the language in all of these agreements is identical in substance,'' he wrote Hatch, a critic of the practice.
