In one potentially damaging e-mail from July 19 2005, shortly after the site’s launch, Steve Chen, YouTube co-founder wrote to co-founders Jawed Karim and Chad Hurley: “Jawed, please stop putting stolen videos on the site.” Mr Chen’s e-mail continued: “We’re going to have a tough time defending the fact that we’re not liable for the copyrighted material on the site because we didn’t put it up when one of the co-founders is blatantly stealing content from other sites and trying to get everyone to see it.” In another e-mail on September 3 2005, Mr Hurley wrote to the co-founders: “Aaahhh, the site is starting to get out of control with copyrighted material.” ... ft.com
