I saw a show on the Military Channel a couple of years back, which featured the A-10 Warthog (best plane in our Air Force). They pointed out that the recoil from the 30mm GAU gatling gun theoretically matched the full thrust of the plane's twin jet engines, and if the GAU could carry enough ammo it would stop the plane. On that show General Chuck Horner, who commanded the air campaign against Iraq in 1991, said he was mystified why his son chose (later on) to fly the A-10. But then he realized that the Warthog destroyed everything in sight, and had no real competition except ground fire.
