John--> How do health insurance companies make money? By denying payment to folk they insure.

Dale--> And America does not have a social consensus that believes that is wrong, that's the incredible part.

Lane--> I think you are misreading if you think that there isn't a consensus on that.

A couple of comments on this exchange:
1. Insurance companies also make money by raising premiums, which eventually, IMHO, will be their demise.

2. I think Lane is right--most people do believe it is wrong. But most people also think that it won't happen to them. And most people are probably right. At least most of the time. Like very good things, very bad things usually happen only to a minority of people. When the premiums go skyward, though, and more and more companies drop insurance or the cost to individuals becomes more onerous and transparent, there will be more griping. Republicans will blame regulations and (assuming it passes) this health care bill, but the real reason will be that the system as currently structured is simply untenable. Costs have been hidden from end users for a long time now, and the medical sector (speaking broadly) has taken advantage of it. Many people throughout the system make a lot of money, a lot more money most of us make and a lot more than people do comparable work make in other parts of the world. We simply won't be able to pay that kind of money anymore. Especially on top of the extra costs that the insurance companies lay on top of the actual medical care.
