Good article. This is exactly the kind of thing that is so frustrating. Americans will use all sorts of free market arguments to complain against the government setting standards and ensuring we invest in strategic things like broadband internet. But that anti-government bias has lead directly to a hodgepodge of rules, regional monopoly power, higher prices, and less choice for consumers.

Somewhere along the way, Americans stopped trusting our government to work with private industry and academia to help move this country forward. When that triple partnership died and the people decided that our government is always bad, that is when our country started to decline in earnest.

Somehow we need to get back on a path where government can be a constructive part of the solution to help drive more competition into industry, to help incubate strategic industries, and be a force for economic prosperity.
