I sympathize with libertarians when they are faced with the modern Republican party. They get a lot of small government rhetoric but no real small government reforms that make any difference. It's like the social agenda, the infamous "culture wars" they use to rally the base, then fail over and over to implement anything really different to serve that agenda.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see that movement fracture and a formal Conservative Party take shape for those who want to advocate more purist libertarian ideas. They would get killed in most elections, but they would enjoy the joust, I think.

As far as real changes, civil rights were probably the most important thing the Dems ever did. The larger government functions - SS and Medicare/Medicaid - are now an irremovable staple in American life too.

Just like universal healthcare coverage will be in five years. Watching the Reps say no, we really do need to let insurance companies jerk you around and screw you over, that is going to be very funny.
