Most Reagan supporters had no ideological scruples beyond wanting lower taxes and more free services and gifts. Given a choice of Democracy or "Fascism with a $500 check" Fascism would have won hands-down. It was the same sort of personalities who supported Juan and Evita PEron.

When only a minority of the voting public bears the burden of pharmaceutical prices more than double the price charged for these drugs elsewhere, or other dislocations in the health care system, it's easy for a demagogue like Dick Armey to find a following of lightly-informed people who believe global pharmaceutical firms should charge U.S. consumers more than twice the price in Europe, Australia or other industrialized nations.

Now, everyone in America will be bearing their share of the cost for this type of stupidity. Now when a Dick Armey leads a patriotic salute to paying double world-standard pharmaceutical prices, or something equally as stupid, in the name of "the free market!" - and Americans learn their alternative is lower taxes and lower insurance premiums - the Dick Armeys of the world will discover they have lost their following with former Reagan supporters.

Now, that's real major medical cost control!
