The Democrtic party picked a more left wing person to replace Joe but the move backfired.

Actually, the party establishment backed Lieberman in the primary. Once he lost the primary, it backed its own nominee. Standard stuff.

In the senate, he caucuses with the Dems and they, much to my displeasure, let him keep some of his clout by chairing the Homeland Security Committee. It's beyond me to understand how you permit a senator who campaigned against his own party's presidential candidate to retain any clout. Whatsoever.

I don't recall Ben Nelson campaigning against Obama. Nor Bayh. Nor Lincoln.
