Well, handset access to the first generation feature sets will be back online before year end.. 2010.

Earlier chipsets would be useless without the upgraded RAN's and Core Network. Unfortunately, the first 5 RAN/Core Network installation for N. American service will not be completed until mid-2012. The prototype ASIC's will be available in April of next year to sample to device manufactures. Pre-production ASIC's a few months later, with production ASIC's in the beginning of 2012.

They have 50 million in inventory and another 50 million in Qualcomm user terminals to work through before 2012. The company wants to convert the cash they paid for the contractually agreed hardware back into cash. So I believe that they only way to do this quickly. And also deal a blow to the competition is to "aggressively price" the MOU to sell through the hardware inventory in the channel..

The problem with the dearly beloved was that they had a fully loaded 747-400 that only had 1,000 ft of tarmac to get airborne.
