Yes, and that's why I posted that their books are closed and the legislators they support so lavishly aren't about to make them open them or to remove their antitrust exemptions.

I find that interesting but unresponsive to the question of why they engage in the practice. That they do it so that their books are closed doesn't make any sense. They do it so that their books remain closed? Better but still doesn't work. That they do it despite their books being closed makes no sense. That they do it because their books are closed explains how they can get away with it, not why they do it. I'm getting nowhere trying to connect the dots. <g>

With respect to your main question, however, no one, NO ONE, is arguing that the insurance companies are in danger of going out of business under our current system.

Not my question. Not a question I would ask given that I don't see how anyone could question that this has been a boon for the insurance companies and given that I couldn't care less about their well being.

You can choose to believe that they would price at some lower level that would not maximize their profits

In the first place, I cannot find any way to believe that a non-profit prices with any regard for its profits.

In the second place, pricing at a lower level may very well maximize profits.

In the third place, how did we refocus from booting sick customers onto pricing?

The questions above are all rhetorical. I don't see any profit, pun intended, in going forward with this.
