They do it because they are greedy. Unrequited greed doesn't make any sense. For it to make sense, they'd have to be garnering something of value. What would that be? If you want to attribute it to a character flaw, I could see a claim that they were just plain mean. Hurting someone by booting him satisfies meanness. Booting someone doesn't satisfy greed.
