dited:He wrote the book long BEFORE those events--REALITY Twain always had brutal view of human nature. The promise was to his wife significantly before his wife died--people like to KOWTOW to ideas like "he was a bitter in his old age"--well maybe those eldewrly that do so are ONLY a LOT wiser than the young, far far less GULLIBLE and are no longered PROGRAMMED to the lie that humanity(In The Overall dominant trend, that is---individuals are another matter) is Progressing WITHIN. i am the anti-matter to Pollyanism, poor poor self DECEPTION Pollyanism, psj, you will hate me in time:) Max p.s. Also writes as to why he did not publish it, it was a combination of cowardice on his part and his love for his deceased wife------this book was NOT something put on paper in his last lonely days. It evidently was written over a twenty year period. It is was an prolonged essay(again, i repeat, evidently written over 20 years of time, and thinking on the matter), and was titled "What is Man"?
i myself never knew of its existence before i read the NYT Book Review about 2 months ago.
PMany Vonnegut fans refuse to believe the SHOCKERS that the Kurt Vonnegut,jr wrote in his last book--which really is just a long letter of NOW i tell you my final conclusions before i die.(Book is title "Man Without a Country") Even his own son tries to play the book down, insulting K.V. by saying it was all because of Bush being elected that caused his writingthe letter/"book"--now that is an INSULT!!
What a SHAMELESS INSULT to a quite vividly rational old man, to scoff at this book, "with he was old and bitter"--that is an EXTREME insult to the man Kurt Vonnegut. i think the "bitter old" bit is a huge COP OUT to men that are writing down their deepest beliefs . And in the case of Twain, it was NOT his last writings,at all.
And his slant i gather is "i should have published it" |
