OT: Twain was a like a Woody Allen who(Allen) said of himself "I am a very SAD man that happens to have a gift for comedy"
i knew of the tragedy but didn't realize he took such personal blame for it.
Twain referred to himself as being Samuel Clemens until he sat down to write, and that 'other' fellow Mark Twain took over.

Also his love for his wife was quite deep, one observer, a close friend, said he never witnessed him smile after his wife's death.
What i , personally, loved best about his last years was that he used his being an EXTREMELY FAMOUS man to relentlessly attack Teddy Roosevelt.
Basically he savagely attacked Roosevelt's "Manifest Destiny" and painted him as a war loving imperialistic lunatic.
He wrote that great line --which i guess at--no i go into full blown paraphrase 'i never wanted to see the claws of the American Eagle in the backs of the oppressed snared in the darkness of "Our Manifest Destiny", our imperialism' that the gist of i, anyway:) Max

p.s. When he was on edge of bankruptcy his father-in law said he could help out on this, and use bankruptcy to reduce his debt.
Twain said he would pay back every cent he owed via his own effort, and we thus got the historic Mark Twain world over speaking tour.
The tour received RAVE reviews every where and turned into a colossal success, and he thus did fully pay back his debt.
But by the end of it, he was truly WORLD FAMOUS.Max
