Thirty +/- years ago I skimmed the anti-federalist papers. Seem to recall they came in ten or twelve volumes. Heavy reading.

Vague recollection is that the anti-s were every bit as literate as the winners. Sometimes I think it would have been better if they'd prevailed.

OTH, maybe it wouldn't have made a difference. The constraints envisioned in the Constitution are now widely regarded as silly and archaic. That despite centuries of experience here and there validating that freedom is the superior method of organizing society. Maybe there's something in our DNA that precludes appreciation, let alone understanding.
