OT: Saw Ray Davies last night at the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix. Anyone who is a fan of the Kinks will love this show, because he played (almost exclusively) Kinks material, mainly the really popular stuff. Only 2 dates left (tonight in Anaheim, tomorrow in Agoura Hills).
The on-topic part of this is he had a great tongue-in-cheek intro to Victoria where he mentioned that he was growing up as the British Empire was crumbling. He inferred that it was an unavoidable fate of empires (including the US?). And of course the lyrics of the song sing about the Brits at their farthest reach of conquest. Very thought provoking at this particular point in history, and I don't think that song choice was an accident. Had a nice intro to his song The Tourist relating his shooting in New Orleans. Said the people there were great to him afterwards, including Alex Chilton who came over to talk music many times while he was convelescing. Other songs included All Day and All of the Night, Tired of Waiting for You, Low Budget, You Really Got Me, Apeman, 20th Century Man, David Watts, Celluloid Heroes, Sunny Afternoon, Alcohol. Lola was the final encore, of course.
Great, great, great show, one of the best live shows I've seen in years (including the Stones, Green Day, the Who, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc, etc, etc.). |
