Kent--Greetings. In my mind it is commendable that you took the step to pruchase a Bible and attempt to search out the claims of Christ. I would suggest that it is promptings of the Lord that caused you to take this first step.
Before bcoming a Christian, I searched many philosophies and many religions. Then one day I picked up the Bible and started reading.
I can only say that if you read the NEW TEST with an honest heart and desiring to know the truth the Holy Spirit will bring you to the truth.
There are of course some "scholars" that are believers and honest but I have found the majority of modern "scholars" filled with self-serving motivations.
The point, however, is not to debate the authenticity of modern scholars but the authenticity of Jesus.
Is Jesus the promised Messiah of the ancient Hebrews?
Is Jesus the son of God and fully divine like His Father?
Did Jesus open the eyes of the blind, did he heal incurable deseased, did he raise the dead back to life?
Did Jesus rise from the grave as reported by the Gospels or was he a fake as reported by the unbelieving Jews?
Was Jesus God's atoning lamb to wash away the sins and rebellion of manking?

These are some of the key question you need to address when you read the Gospels.
As you begin to read, be bold and request the Holy Spirit to guide you in understanding.

I pray to the Lord that you are answered and illuminated according to the authentic desires of your heart.
