Bromine is used in some pretreatment on certain gold ores in certain
electrolytic direct processes that are considered "cyanide replacements". The cost is higher than cyanide but uses chloride from water and salts to dissolve gold.

It can recover precious metals particularly silver.

It is a powerful reagant. But I don't believe it can break down silica. I think you have to be careful with it in relation to hydrocarbons.
