My unprofessional opinion from watching Exabyte for years, is that development of a high capacity tape drive is a three year plus project even for those who already have a leading edge product. 8MM, DLT, DAT, Travan have all migrated upwards in capacities. No one has come out with a blockbuster, leading edge high capacity drive out of the chute. And a committe comprised of behemouths would seem even less likely to do so. With the next upward migration of DLT being 2 years away and undoubtably several years in past direct or related development, it is obviously not easy or quick. If DLT is not already the de facto standard, it will be by then. Can we assume that SEGs participation indicates lack of confidence in Sony's roadmap. Also, Sony with the most experience in this area is conspicuously absent. Awefully hard to find a bettter protected franchise in technology.
