Not according to U.S. history. The corporations did not need a huge govt. to rip off America and oppress workers for a very long time during the 19th Century. Only the rise of trade unions allowed a working middle class to emerge. Now that Reagan destroyed the union movement, corporations are even scarier. And the trusts are coming back together under names like Exxon/Mobil and Chevron/Texaco and JP Morgan/Chase Manhattan/Chemical/Texas Commerce et. al.
